Measure the part you will actually see
Measure the sofa from outside arm to outside arm. Then measure the usable wall between curtains, shelves, switches or other features that need their own breathing room. A wide wall does not automatically call for a wide print if the sofa occupies only one side of it.
Keep three numbers separate: the printed image, the sheet of paper and the outside dimensions of the frame. A white border, a mat and a substantial frame profile can turn a modest image into a much larger wall object. Ask for the finished dimensions when a listing gives only the print size.
Use a proportion as a starting sketch
For an initial paper test, try a framed width of roughly two thirds of the sofa width. This is a decorating starting point, not a requirement. A 78-inch sofa would suggest a test shape around 52 inches wide. You might prefer a smaller shape in a quiet room or a wider pair of frames over a deep sectional.
The subject matters too. A dark, densely colored print can feel heavier than a pale landscape with plenty of open sky, even when the frames are identical. Avoid choosing solely from a width formula; compare how much visual attention the picture demands.
Put the outline on the wall
Cut paper to the outside frame dimensions and temporarily position it with a wall-safe method suitable for your paint finish. Test any removable adhesive in an inconspicuous place first. Include the mat in the paper shape rather than imagining it later.
Look from the doorway, from a chair across the room and from the sofa itself. Check the relationship with lamps and curtains. If the shape seems stranded high on the wall, lower the template until the picture and sofa read as a group, while leaving enough clearance for people to sit comfortably.
Compare one print with a pair
Two smaller frames can fill a broad area without requiring one oversized print. Measure the total arrangement: the width of both frames plus the intended gap. Do not compare two 20-inch frames with a single 40-inch frame as though the wall footprint were identical.
Try both arrangements on paper before ordering. A pair introduces another alignment and a visible gap; one large piece gives the eye a single stopping point. Neither is automatically more balanced. The better choice is the one that fits the furniture, leaves comfortable edges and looks convincing from the places where you use the room.
Write the chosen outside frame size beside your sofa measurement before shopping. That small note prevents a product photograph from quietly changing the scale you already tested.
